CONVOCATION 27 October 2019: We Want to Defend What Is Important
We Want to Defend What Is Important
Humanity is suffering the consequences of the degradation of the earth, contamination of the air, poisoning and scarcity of water, climate change and the exhaustion of natural resources. The planet is losing its topsoil and the earth does not absorb nor can it store rain.
The voracity of the Market is insatiable. Our system of life consists in exploiting one another and depleting nature. Cities are increasingly full, while the vacated rural areas attempt to maintain their continuance in the countryside. Wars are multiplying around the world, increasing destruction and poverty.
No army defends us from these dangers, and, in addition, consumes the economic resources that should go to those who are suffering the consequences of the suffocation of the planet.
Fortunately, alongside this devastating situation, there are people who do not want to dominate nature, rather to feel as a part of it, and with a different outlook towards building life and social justice.
Women in Black of Madrid:
Want to draw attention to the work and ideas of some women who are engaged in this task.
♀ Vandana Shiva and María Mies, eco-feminists, connect the exploitation and degradation of the natural world and the subordination and oppression of women.
♀ Wangari Maathai, Green Belt Movement of Kenya, understood that many of Kenya’s problems derived from their environmental degradation and decided to combat it by creating greenhouses and nurseries for native trees.
♀ Berta Cáceres struggled to avoid the displacements of indigenous communities caused by the construction of hydroelectric dams. She was assassinated for this cause.
♀ Greta Thunberg denounced the climate emergency in which our planet is engulfed and demands urgent measures to hold back climate change.
♀ All the women who in their various activist endeavors practice the Ethics of Care.
♀ All the women who with their effort and daily work care for life.
We demand that our government
Practice austerity, promote appropriate policies and dedicate resources to improve this situation.
