CONVOCATION 24 November 2024: November 25th: On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we remember the women in conflict areas
25 November: On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we remember the women in conflict areas
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we want to remember the women who suffer violence in areas of conflict.
According to data of the United Nations, during 2023 the number of civilian victims in armed conflicts increased 72% in comparison with 2022. In particular, the number of women killed doubled and that of minors tripled. Sexual violence also increased: 50% globally and in the case of serious violations of young girls, 35%. During that year there were some 170 armed conflicts and some 612 million women and girls living in a radius of 50 kilometers of these combats.
Sexual violence is systematically used as a weapon of war: from the symbolic and physical use of the bodies of women as a battlefield and ethnic cleansing to illegal slave trade as a means of financing various armed factions, women and girls are used and abused in all sorts of violence. Rarely does this violence end up with judgment in the courts.
In addition, in an international context of the resurgence of fascism and religious fanaticism, women’s sexual and reproductive liberty is put into question in more places in the world, not just in conflict areas. We see that more and more everything that can be identified as feminism experiences attacks of various sorts: criticism, false report and in too many areas, detention, prison and death sentences.
Facing this real war against women, the media are quiet and despite the extensive coverage of the recent wars in Ukraine and Russia, or the genocide in Palestine, the media barely mention the specific violence against women. Neither do they mention the leaders, especially civilian leaders, who denounce these facts. They are mentioned only in situations such as the war in Syria in which the image of the Kurdish women of Rojava has been instrumentalized and pre-sented as something picturesque, while there has been no mention in any media of the Kurdish women who oppose the policies of Turkey in Turkish Kurdistan.
Women in Black:
♀ Are in solidarity with the women who live in war zones and with those who have had to aban-don their homes because of armed conflicts.
♀ Demand respect for women’s sexual and reproductive liberties everywhere in the world.
♀ Demand that the international community respect international laws and protect the right to life of civilians in war zones.
♀ Request policies that guarantee a real education in the values of equality, solidarity and peace.
