CONVOCATION 27 April 2025: War Against Infants and Women in Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
War Against Infants and Women in Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Some of the bloodiest and most cruel armed conflicts are happening now in the Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to the UN, since 2023, twelve million people have been internally displaced in Sudan and more than three million have taken refuge in neighboring countries. The DRC is following a similar path with more than one million people displaced in 2025.
An especially serious matter is the sexual violence that women and girls suffer in these conflicts, including rape, forced marriages (in many cases, infants), sexual slavery, kidnapping and removal to other countries for sexual exploitation, coercion to maintain sexual relations in exchange for food, illnesses caused by sexual transmission, injuries, lack of access to contraceptive methods, etc., without forgetting suicides to avoid dishonor and trauma.
The systematic use of rape as part of the military strategy among armed groups has been documented. Sudanese women expressly speak of the normalization of rape in different phases: the first, when troops enter to occupy an area, against all the women indiscriminately, with the goal to instill terror and frighten the people; later, the specific objective of rape is punishment centered on specific women who stand out for helping others, for organizing themselves. Even so, the African women have managed to maintain networks for survival in extreme conditions and have been able to document violations suffered.
In March, UNICEF published a chilling report on sexual aggression towards young boys and girls in Sudan. The majority of violations are perpetrated by the military forces or paramilitaries and their objective is humiliation and dehumanization of the communities.
116 million euros would enable launching programs to prevent this sort of violence in Sudan, including sexual violence against infants.
Europe is going to increase 800 billion euros in armaments in the next four years.
Although in the West we speak of civil wars, the African women well know that at the root of these conflicts is the plundering of natural resources, as in the case of Congolese minerals, resources for our cell phones and electric cars, in exchange for sending them weapons that maintain the violence.
Women in Black of Madrid against War request:
♀ A guarantee that the products manufactured, bought or sold in Europe come from raw materials extracted with dignity and not stained with blood.
♀ Immediate ending of commerce in weapons with countries in conflict or with paramilitary organizations.
♀ Protection for women and infants in Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
