CONVOCATION 25 May 2025: Women, Peace and Disarmament

WOMEN, PEACE AND DISARMAMENT

A remembrance for those women who are already making history today

This May 24th we celebrate International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, day on which the feminist movement continues to support global disarmament and demilitarization, protests against the increase in military expenditure at all levels and against the maintenance of weapons and nuclear energy, as the women of the Greenham Common Peace Camp have already done. On this notable date, we want to remember that:

We defend the incorporation of women in peace processes in places in conflict or war or in situations during which their governments and armed actors invest in, investigate, develop, manufacture or exhibit their armaments destined for destruction and death.

We currently continue to use the tools of nonviolent protest used by antimilitarist and feminist women ever since the First World War, such as demonstrations, strikes, accusations against war criminals, denouncing our governments, support for deserters, support for refugees of all factions, etc.

We draw attention to the women in all the world who work in favor of peace and against war, sometimes immersed in war or who have had to flee in order to continue denouncing their government and thus defend human rights.

Since 1919, the Palestinian women have grouped together in organizations that have a lot to do with mutual help among women. Throughout the 20th century, their presence has increased in public spaces, where their energies are focused on resistance to the colonization of their land. They are the major participants in strategies of boycott, consumer strikes, creation of cooperatives, marches and protests, and confrontation with the Israeli army, especially against the building of the wall and the destruction of their houses, participating in local committees and organizing for survival in the refugee camps. They also are jailed, suffer tortures and violations. They continue maintaining their nonviolent struggle against the genocide in Gaza.

Today we join all the Women in Black against War and we urgently demand:
That the manufacturers of weapons stop enriching themselves by sowing pain and destruction all over the planet. Not in our name!
A permanent cease fire in Gaza, that humanitarian aid (food, water and energy among others) reach the people of Gaza, and that their right to live in peace in their land is respected.

Another world is possible!

This day we want to remember our dear Israeli friend and activist of Women in Black, Ednna Glukman, and by remembering her we invoke the work of Israeli and Palestinian antiwar activists who have worked since 1988 for peace and justice, opposing the policy of occupation of Palestinian land and saying STOP THE OCCCUPATION. At present, vigils are taking place in Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv.
