CONVOCATION 23 February 2025: Nuclear Weapons, NO, Thank You
Nuclear Weapons, NO, Thank You
Currently, it is known that five countries have nuclear weapons deployed: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and China, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. There are indications that Israel also has this type of weapon. Iran has developed the technology for enriching uranium, supposedly to generate nuclear energy but suspicions from the West have led to their suspension as a member of the Security Council.
In 2024 the organization Nihon Hidankyo received the Nobel Peace Prize for its testimonial and informational work against nuclear weapons. It is formed by the survivors of the atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, who also continue investigating the additional effects of those explosions.
Other organizations against nuclear weapons are the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament), which works towards the unilateral disarmament of the UK and that it cease building nuclear power plants.
In Spain, the Alliance for Nuclear Disarmament (ADN) brings together companies and organizations to promote that Spain sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPAN). This treaty seeks a total ban on nuclear weapons. It has been signed by 94 countries. The ADN also seeks to sensitize people on the danger that nuclear weapons entail. It is part of ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons), winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
In 2021 there were five bases of the United States in Europe that seemed to harbor nuclear armaments (Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and two in northern Italy.) At present, Great Britain has a very active mobilization to preclude that the US Base Lakenheath (the largest airbase in this country in Europe) house nuclear weapons. In Italy, between the bases of Aviano and Ghedi, there are 40 nuclear warheads, more than in any other country in Europe. In Germany, the base named Buchel has been blocked by activists several times and the people have lodged 20 demands, as well as campaigns organized favoring legislation against nuclear armaments.
According to calculations made by Greenpeace, if there were a nuclear explosion in a large city such as Berlin, 25,000 persons would die immediately and another 47,000 would be seriously wounded. No health system can tend to 47,000 people at the same time. The only possible solution is prevention.
Spain plans to build nuclear powered submarines (S-100 Poseidon) and permits that this foreign type of submarine docks at the Spanish naval bases. A nuclear submarine considered as a weapon of war can produce an enormous catastrophe.
For all of these reasons, we demand that our government:
♀ Sign TPAN as a first preventative measure against nuclear war.
♀ Deny to house nuclear weapons in Spain and not permit those submarines with this type of weapon dock in Spanish ports.
♀ Renounce building nuclear powered submarines.
♀ Mediate and achieve an agreement between the US and Russia to prohibit nuclear weapons.
