CONVOCATION 30 March 2025: What Scares Us Is Rearmament

What scares us is rearmament

Profoundly outraged, we listen to the announced alarming increase in European military spending (up to 800 billion € in 4 years). This rearmament will no t bring more security to Europe. It is not going to bring us security because it never has.

We are worried that we are headed towards a new world war. What we fear is the threat of a war, the very same thing those which sustain the rearmament initiative argue. Rearmament, however, is the best way to start a war, not to avoid it.

We are frightened by the declarations of our governments and those coming from European institutions, affirming that our defense will be the increase in weapons and trivializing the consequences of wars. A new war would have tragic consequences for future generations and on the environment.

We denounce the hypocrisy with which some armed conflicts are dealt with in contrast to others. The language changes depending on where the instruments of war will be sent to or where civilian deaths and violations of human rights will be ignored. The flow of weapons follows that of the usurpation of resources.

We denounce the trap that is the militaristic discourse that aspires to normalize rearmament as if it were something logical. Our enemies are the enterprises that deal in arms and the industrial framework that supports them, all of whom become wealthy with the sale of weapons.

We don’t want to contribute to refilling the empty European arms factories nor do we wish to contribute to a rearmament that nourishes NATO. We do not trust NATO because it is not an autonomous nor independent organization. It doesn’t serve to avoid wars, rather it encourages them.

We are frightened by the return of military service, recruitment, sending troops to other countries, and also the very existence of armies. This is what makes us feel insecure.

As Women in Black of Madrid we:
Request that Spain and the European Union direct their effort in international politics to achieve a just peace in the areas currently at war.
-Request that Spain and the European Union listen to the organizations that work for peace and demilitarization, keeping in mind the manifest: “We are not resigned to rearmament and war in Europe”.
We invite the citizens to join the campaign for War Tax Resistance to the military expenditure in their declaration of the IRPF (personal income tax): https://objecionfiscal.info/.

LETS NOT LET OURSELVES BE DRAGGED INTO WAR!
DEMILITARIZE NOW!
