CONVOCATION 26 October 2025: In Legitimate Defense and for Human Security, NO to War

In Legitimate Defense and for Human Security, NO to War

When faced with barbarity, humanity has attempted to equip itself with tools that, while not stopping it, seek to curb it or at least guarantee a minimum of justice. Thus, the Geneva Convention, which regulates war, approved but never respected, protects those who do not participate in conflicts (civilians, medical personnel, humanitarian workers, journalists); civilian structures, including sites of historical heritage (which must be respected and not used by armed actors); and those who can no longer wage war (wounded and sick soldiers, prisoners of war, etc.). The Permanent International Criminal Court was also created by the Rome Statute, with jurisdiction over crimes against humanity, crimes of genocide, war crimes and crimes of aggression.

According to the Charter of the United Nations (UN), the Security Council is ultimately responsible for maintaining international peace and security. However, the permanent members of the Council have been involved in one way or another in most of the wars that have taken place since its creation. The UN has declared wars legal over the years, such as the Persian Gulf War in 1991. It should be noted that some of the permanent members of the Security Council and other countries, prior to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, instigated or facilitated its occurrence. This disaster for Iraqis and the local and global destabilization still continues.

Other armed conflicts, however, have taken place with the opposition of the Security Council and have therefore been illegal under international law, such as the Second Persian Gulf War, the NATO bombing of Serbia during the Serbia-Kosovo War in 1999, or the invasions by Russia (a member of the Security Council) of both Georgia and Crimea (Ukraine).

A paradigmatic example of non-compliance with UN resolutions is Palestine. The Israeli government has been progressively occupying Palestine since 1967. Currently, with premeditation and malice aforethought, it is causing famine in Gaza, carrying out genocide in full view of the world, and effectively destroying Gaza completely, while the Security Council allows it.

The permanent members of the Security Council and other countries, who supply weapons to the warring parties, are implicated in the wars taking place in Africa.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000 (adopted unanimously) and the 10 subsequent resolutions on women's peace and security aim to increase women's participation in conflict prevention and resolution and ensure the protection and respect of the human rights of women and children in wars and armed conflicts. Women's participation at peace negotiations in 2023 was 1.5%. Despite all these resolutions, the percentage of women and children murdered and raped during war has increased dramatically since 2000.

In the face of all the human rights violations and the impunity of their perpetrators, no one can continue to maintain that there are legal or just wars.

Women in Black say that war is the main enemy of humanity; it has not been and never will be regulated or controllable, and there is no way to protect women and children from it. In Legitimate Self-Defense we need a world without wars.
